Wi-Fi 8 routers are starting to appear: here’s what you need to know

The first prototypes of Wi-Fi 8 routers have appeared at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, ushering in another Wi-Fi standard before Wi-Fi 7 has established itself.

The final Wi-Fi 7 spec was only finalised in July last year, although (as usual) manufacturers had been releasing kit for years before the standard was settled.

Now, they’re rushing headlong into Wi-Fi 8, with multiple vendors beginning to show off kit that’s based on the new standard, which isn’t expected to be finalised until mid-2028.

Let’s be clear: the kit being demonstrated in Las Vegas is very early prototypes. Asus, for example, is showing off the ROG NeoCore, which bears the appearance of a massive multi-sided dice that you might use for Dungeons and Dragons.

It doesn’t have any external aerials โ€“ unlike many of Acer’s previous high-end routers โ€“ and is designed to be used in a mesh configuration, with multiple units around the home or office.

The company is not sharing many details about the device’s specification, but it will be aimed at the enthusiast end of the market โ€“ doubtless with a premium price tag โ€“ when it comes to market later this year, probably towards the end of 2026.

Broadcom has also unveiled Wi-Fi 8 APUs and radios designed to be integrated into manufacturers’ routers.

The radios “each combines 2.4GHz and 5GHz operation into a single silicon,” according to Broadcom, although interestingly don’t mention the 6GHz band that was introduced with Wi-Fi 6. Broadcom further claims the radios will have “advanced eco-modes and power optimisation for ultra-low energy consumption” and “third-generation digital pre-distortion that reduces peak power by 25%”.

What will Wi-Fi 8 bring?

So aside from giving the router companies a new excuse to flog more kit, what will Wi-Fi 8 actually bring that’s not covered by Wi-Fi 7?

It’s not an increase in speed. The maximum throughput of Wi-Fi 8 equipment is expected to be similar if not identical to Wi-Fi 7, with few people really crying out for more speed.

Instead, Wi-Fi 8 (or 802.11bn) is being designed to make wireless behave more like a wired network, with a focus on consistently low latency, fewer dropped packets and steadier performance in crowded or interference-heavy environments, such as apartment blocks. Part of that includes smarter coordination between different access points, to make sure they’re working cooperatively rather than tussling over the same airspace.

Specific improvements include High Priority Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (HIP EDCA), which priorities urgent packets such as audio, particularly in scenarios where there are different audio streams being broadcast from the same access point.

Improved power management, as highlighted in the Broadcom product announcement, may also be of particular interest to enterprises looking to shave their energy bills.

It seems likely we’re going to see the first Wi-Fi 8 routers appear towards the end of the year, but it’s highly unlikely you’ll see Wi-Fi 8 radios in devices such as laptops and smartphones before 2027, limiting the usefulness of the routers.

It’s also not unknown for Wi-Fi standards to change significantly from early prototypes, which can’t always be flashed with firmware upgrades that make them final standard compliant, so it’s a brave buyer that jumps in on those early, expensive Wi-Fi 8 devices.
