IBM furthers its quantum computing ambitions with the addition of new partners and customers

Yonsei University, a private university located in the Korean capital of Seoul, has rolled out the IBM Quantum System One at its Songdo International Campus Quantum Computing Center, IBM announced last week.

According to IBM, the university will use the System One for research, as well as offering quantum computing services to partners including public sector bodies, research agencies, and healthcare and education organisations.   

Earlier this year, Yonsei University and IBM signed a memorandum of understanding to work on quantum computing for biotechnology research, which the university hopes will contribute to discoveries in protein structures. These could be used in the development of new medicines. The pair also agreed to joint work around quantum algorithms, training materials and educational events. 

The Yonsei University machine will be the first quantum system to go live in the country and the fifth IBM Quantum System One in the world, outside of IBM’s own machines.  

The Quantum System One was launched in 2019, with the first deployment in a non-IBM facility taking place in 2023 at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft research institute in Germany. 

IBM’s System One runs on its 127-qubit Eagle processor, the predecessor to the company’s current top-of-the-range quantum chip, the 433-qubit Osprey.

IBM also announced last week that it had expanded the scope of its partnership with French-headquartered quantum processor company Pasqal

Earlier this year, the two companies signed an agreement to “develop a common approach to quantum-centric supercomputing and promoting application research in chemistry and materials science”. The pair use the term “quantum-centric” computing to refer to systems that bring together both quantum and non-quantum approaches.

IBM and Pasqal announced last week that they will soon start work on creating a unified programming model that will allow interoperability between IBM’s own quantum systems, Pasqual’s neutral atom-based hardware as well as non-quantum processors such as CPUs and GPUs. 

Under the updated deal, users of Qiskit – the Python-based open-source SDK for IBM’s quantum computing services – will now also be able to use it with Pasqal’s devices. 

According to researchers Fortune Business Insights, the quantum computing market was worth around $885 million in 2023, but is expected to grow to over $1bn this year and hit $12.6 billion by 2032.
