What female tech leaders say: breaking into STEM isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being persistent

Even in 2026, young women considering careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics face challenges. Not least of which being that the field is still overwhelmingly male. But it works the other way too: STEM as a sector is missing out on skills that may not be strengths of its traditional cohort.

How do we fix this? To find out, we asked female leaders across STEM industries – from AI to fintech, cybersecurity to engineering – to share the lessons they wish they’d learned earlier. Their advice isn’t about checking every box or waiting to “feel ready”. It’s about leaning into opportunities, embracing mistakes and using your perspective to make a real impact.

Curiosity beats knowing it all

“To any woman looking to build a career in STEM, my advice is to cultivate relentless curiosity. In this fast moving world of both technology and work, your ability to learn and adapt is more valuable than ever. Don’t feel you need to know all the answers on day one. Even for me, and many others, everyday is a learning day. Instead, focus on being a lifelong learner who isn’t afraid to ask ‘why’. If you stay curious about how science and technology can be used to solve human problems, you won’t just keep up with the future of work, you will lead it.”

“My advice comes from my old mentor’s metaphor where she talks about her accumulations of skills, frameworks and methods acquired through her life. She described it as her ‘Backpack’ and said that people had given her things that she kept in her backpack. The same is true of building a career in STEM.

Whether your skills are about technical topics, leadership frameworks or they are the methods we use to organise and run our lives, we all carry a backpack of the lessons we keep close. Over time all these learnings helped my mentor on her journey to becoming a great leader and, when she has the opportunity, she pays it forward by pulling things out of her backpack to share with others.

So, my advice for any woman considering a career in STEM? Now is the time to start collecting what goes into your backpack.”

Technical fluency is learned, not innate

Hand in hand with the thrill of discovery comes constant, often brutal judgment

“Papers are rejected, grants are denied, and experiments fail. In academia, feedback is often anonymous and blunt to the point of cruelty, which can feel a lot like trolling. If you internalise that feedback as a measure of your worth as a human being, the emotional toll is unsustainable.

I’ve observed too many brilliant women leave STEM not because they lacked skill, but because they were conditioned to view setbacks as personal indictments rather than professional data points.

So my advice is: treat failure as a feature, as a useful stepping stone to improvement and growth. In science, it’s the cost of doing something that has never been done before. If you can decouple your self-worth from your work, you become free to take intellectual risks, ask the ambitious questions, and persist through uncertainty.

Today’s scientists aren’t confined to academic labs; they are launching startups, leading venture capital funds, shaping government policy, and driving tech innovation. STEM is the most versatile launchpad for an exciting and long career.

Break barriers, lead boldly, innovate confidently

“My advice to women and girls looking to build a career in STEM is simple: you don’t need to have everything figured out from day one. No-one does. Be curious and build the courage to ask the right questions to understand the why behind things. Good understanding leads to a confident approach to innovation.

“Innovation is stronger when it reflects diverse perspectives, which is why it is essential that women feel empowered to enter and thrive in STEM. Learn the language of tech, even if you don’t write the code

“If you’re starting out in STEM, my advice is simple: get fluent, not perfect. You don’t need a technical background or to be the one writing the code, but it helps to understand how systems work, how data flows, and what’s technically possible. Problem solving isn’t perfect – it’s messy, exciting, and yours

“I would advise girls to be curious, I define curiosity as mastering the art of question asking. Girls need to lean in and speak out, inquire when they don’t understand, raise their hands when they know an answer, take safe action. Often, girls get stuck in analysis paralysis and over analyzing, build resilience in trusting your knowledge and self, take risks faster and ask every question that comes to mind, travel deep into rabbit holes, be obsessive. Meaningful contribution beats traditional credentials

“A lot of advice aimed at women in STEM still focuses on confidence, resilience, or being more assertive, as though women need fixing before they’re allowed to belong. But science and STEM aren’t neutral systems, and I believe waiting until you feel perfectly qualified or “ready” often just means opting out of opportunities that were never designed with you in mind.

There’s also a persistent myth that there’s a single, legitimate route into STEM, some sort of neat, linear path that starts early and never deviates. The reality is so different and many of the strongest people I know in STEM arrived from somewhere else entirely. They bring experience from other disciplines, industries, and ways of thinking that strengthen STEM work rather than dilute it.

My advice is not to wait to fit a mould that doesn’t exist. You don’t need to have every certification out there or have followed a traditional route in to be qualified to contribute meaningfully. I know from experience that what matters most is how you think, how you learn, and how willing you are to engage. I truly believe STEM needs more people who are curious, adaptable, and prepared to challenge assumptions and not just those with the most conventional origin stories.”

Master what you love and let your network support the rest

“Master topics that you are passionate about, and learn how to build your network. Your community will be the source of your opportunities and solutions to your challenges. My advice is that STEM needs every kind of person. Don’t rule yourself out just because a field sounds too advanced or intimidating.

“Innovation doesn’t come from one type of personality or skill set, it takes a whole range of people and different skills to bring science and technology to life. Don’t believe the stereotype that STEM teams are just made up of quiet geniuses. They include communicators, creatives, organisers, problem-solvers – people who learn by doing and who make mistakes. “In which case, it may be that your skill set matches the role but you don’t know the field and that’s no problem. A good team will support you as you learn, explain what you don’t know yet, and value the fresh perspective you bring. “My advice is to treat science and technology less as subjects to master, and more as tools for shaping the world around you. Anyone can critique a system. Far fewer step forward to make it work better.

“The most interesting careers are not built by people who follow perfect academic tracks, but by those who get close to real systems, real constraints, and real users, and then decide to improve what they see. The habit of moving from observation to action is what compounds over a career.
