Veeam targets cold-data costs with Data Cloud Vault Archive

Veeam has launched Veeam Data Cloud Vault Archive. This is a new archive-class tier designed to move ageing backups and cold data away from expensive high-performance storage. All without weakening security, compliance or recoverability. The service is generally available alongside Veeam Data Platform v13.1.

The offering addresses a growing problem for data-heavy businesses. The growing pile of data businesses keep: old backups, rarely accessed files and redundant, obsolete and trivial data, often referred to as ROT. Traditionally, this material has been retained on the same premium storage built for fast operational recovery, thus creating unnecessary capacity pressure and an avoidable long-term cost burden. 

Veeam’s answer is policy-based tiering. Essentially, recovery-critical backups remain in the Veeam Data Cloud Vault, while older backups can be automatically moved to the lower-cost Vault Archive tier. The company also supports direct archiving of large unstructured datasets, including NAS backups, through the v13.1 platform release.

That distinction is important. 

Archive storage should not be mistaken for a dumping ground where data disappears. In a ransomware incident, long-retained backup copies can become the organisation’s final clean recovery point. According to the Veeam 2024 Ransomware Trends Report, 96% of ransomware attacks target backup repositories, underlining why cold data needs protection as much as the production environment.

The Vault Archive is built around immutable, encrypted and logically air-gapped storage. Customers can also control data placement and encryption keys, capabilities that speak directly to sovereignty and long-term regulatory requirements. Veeam’s research also found that 58% of organisations view data residency and sovereignty as the most important consideration in deciding where information is stored.

The release also reinforces the company’s 3-2-1-1-0 resilience model: 

• three copies of data, 
• on two media types, 
• with one off-site copy, 
• one immutable or air-gapped copy, 
• and zero errors following recovery testing.

A practical tape alternative

For many businesses, tape is the default low-cost retention option. However, physical handling, transport, off-site logistics and slow restoration can turn a theoretically economical archive into an operational liability. Veeam positions Vault Archive as a managed cloud alternative that retains archive economics while removing much of the friction.

Ultimately, this is a data lifecycle proposition. Organisations can reserve fast, premium storage for what they may need tomorrow and place validated, long-retention data somewhere built for the much longer journey.
