A self-described natural problem solver, it should come as no surprise that Neil Gardner has built his career helping organisations make sense of the complex. He’s already told TechFinitive how AI can help in a separate interview, and as Head of Cloud ERP at SAP he brings over a decade of experience helping businesses embrace digital transformation.
In this interview series, though, we’re focusing on the role of ERP. For Neil, ERP is about building much more than the system itself: itโs developing a control centre that unites every corner of a business all on one intelligent and manageable foundation. That’s when things go well. To avoid ERP implementations falling short of expectations, Neil has learned that success must start long before the technology is implemented. One of the most common pitfalls, he explains, is taking on too much, too soon. โMulti-year ERP transformations can stall when results are invisible for too long,โ he said. Instead, he advises to break large programmes up into shorter, outcome-driven sprints to prove value early and maintain momentum.

To understand where this clear vision for the future comes from, we started by asking Neil about his role, and how his experience with ERP has evolved over the years.
Can you tell us about your role and your experience with ERP systems?
For the last ten years, I have been supporting our EMEA customers to maximise their ERP deployments and see real value โ and returns โ across their entire business.
I am a natural problem solver and a career in technology, and at SAP, means I can help companies of all sizes and across all industries see how our solutions can address their challenges and transform their organisations. On any given day, Iโm helping business leaders cut costs, boost productivity, embed AI into their operations, and harness the power of the cloud to innovate faster and adapt to changing business needs.
What motivates me is helping organisations harness the power of cloud and AI to reimagine how they operate and unlock new levels of agility, innovation and competitiveness. These technologies are not just enablers of efficiency but catalysts for transformation and long-term growth as they seek to stand out against their competitors.
In your view, whatโs the biggest advantage a well-implemented ERP system can bring to an organisation?
Connected organisations run more efficiently, scale and innovate faster, and are able to respond quicker to changing customer demands. ERP systems are a control centre, bringing together disparate processes and workflows, and unifying data to unlock transformation across core business functions including finance, HR, customer experience, and procurement.

This unified view connects all business functions, creating consistency across the organisation. What lessons have you learned from challenging ERP rollouts?
Build the business case early on. At our recent SAP NOW AI Tour UKI event, one of our customers in the Consumers Goods industry stated that โAnybody who thinks there is no business case: the cost of waiting to build a business case is going to be more deadly and more costly than actually starting now.”
This starts with evaluating your processes, existing IT infrastructure, apps and data and identifying how limitations are affecting operational and employee performance, and customer/partner engagement. Then, communicate how transitioning to a modern ERP system will address these challenges, while clearly explaining the expected return on investment (ROI), timelines and how it might affect resourcing.
Derisking your journey with phased value delivery is also important. Multi-year ERP transformations can stall when results are invisible for too long. By breaking large programs into short, outcompeted sprints, technology leaders can reduce risk, prove value early, and unlock incremental funding.
Another key lesson Iโve learned is the importance of a solid data migration strategy. This means establishing a clear set of objectives, alongside a scope, budget and workback plan spanning the implementation. Adopting a clean core approach and testing regularly can also help ensure data accuracy, maintain system performance and avoid delays during implementation.
Finally, leaders should make their technology transformation a shared mission, treating it as a human partnership, not just an IT project. Involve departments, partners and customers and communicate the impact of the migration so teams can prepare.
