Vodafone, IBM develop proof of concept for quantum-safe mobile browsing
Vodafone Group and IBM have developed a proof of concept to safeguard smartphone users and their data from potential future risks posed by quantum computers when browsing the internet.
According to the pair, the proof-of-concept uses IBM Quantum Safe technology to enhance Vodafone Secure Net. This is Vodafone’s all-in-one digital security service that protect users against phishing, malware and identity theft on its fixed and mobile networks.
IBM Quantum Safe technology adds post-quantum cryptography standards to the existing encryption methods used by Vodafone Secure Net.
“As a pioneer in quantum-safe cryptography and solutions, IBM is proud to expand our collaboration with Vodafone to help protect its customers from anticipated quantum risks,” said IBM Quantum Safe Industry Lead Lory Thorpe.
“It’s crucial for organizations to implement post-quantum cryptography, and Vodafone has led by example as an early adopter of post-quantum security solutions.”
Why Vodafone is focused on quantum safe browsing
The proof of concept comes as Vodafone looks to introduce new “attack-resistant” cryptographic algorithms across its networks, including business and consumer products.
Vodafone head of research and development Luke Ibbeston said the work with IBM and other partners will allow the companies to “get ahead of the curve”.
“We want our customers to enjoy the internet without worry, now and in the future,” he said.
“On the one hand quantum computing could have many societal benefits such as modelling new medicines and optimizing advanced digital networks. But on the other hand, it could be used to undermine the cryptographic principles that the internet relies on today.”
Vodafone and IBM demonstrated the new proof-of-concept with support from Akamai Technologies at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
According to IBM, Vodafone became one of the first companies to successfully test IBM Quantum Safe technology to identify and inventory cryptography in its network infrastructure and systems.
“Future-proofing Vodafone Secure Net complements the work Vodafone and IBM are doing at the industry level to promote the adoption of post-quantum cryptography standards and other security best practices in a future of advanced quantum computing,” IBM said in a statement.
The work builds on the companies’ involvement as founding members of the GSMA’s Post-Quantum Telco Network Task Force, an industry group established in 2022 to ensure future quantum networks remain secure. Since its launch, more than 50 telecommunications companies and 20 major operators have joined the task force.
