Schneider Electric at Hannover Messe 2026: “agentic manufacturing” goes mainstream

At Hannover Messe 2026, which ran from 20 to 24 April, Schneider Electric used one of manufacturing’s newest buzz phrases to make a much older promise: faster change on the plant floor without adding more complexity.

Its announcement around “agentic manufacturing”, built with Microsoft Azure AI, points to a workflow in which specialised AI agents automate routine design choices, validate logic before deployment, and keep engineering traceability intact from design through commissioning and operations.

Schneider says its Industrial Copilot is already cutting control configuration and documentation work by up to 50%, with line changes that once took weeks now completed in hours.

What changes on the plant floor is not a sci-fi leap to fully autonomous factories. It is the collapse of handoffs. 

Schneider’s pitch rests on EcoStruxure Automation Expert, its open, software-defined automation platform, which lets manufacturers author, simulate, validate and deploy automation logic once and run it across on-premises, edge and hybrid environments.

Microsoft adds the cloud and AI layer that orchestrates, analyses and optimises those workflows. In a live green hydrogen deployment with H2E Power, Schneider says the setup has delivered more than 6,000 hours of stable autonomous operation and cut the levelized cost of hydrogen by up to 10%, or roughly €500,000 a year for a typical 10 MW plant.

Why agentic manufacturing matters

The significance of Schneider Electric’s Hannover Messe announcement is not simply that another industrial vendor is adding AI to its portfolio. It is that “agentic manufacturing” points to a different operating model for the factory itself. 

Instead of using AI only as a reporting layer or engineering assistant, Schneider is positioning autonomous software agents as active participants in industrial workflows, helping teams design, validate, adapt and optimize production environments with less manual intervention.

That is important because manufacturers are under pressure from several directions at once. 

They need to modernise aging automation estates, manage energy use more intelligently, improve resilience, and respond faster to changes in demand, supply and regulation. In that context, agentic manufacturing is important because it promises to reduce the lag between insight and action.

If engineering logic can be tested faster, if production changes can be simulated before deployment, and if operational decisions can be informed by live data from across the plant, then manufacturers gain something more valuable than incremental efficiency: they gain adaptability.

The broader implication for industry is that AI in manufacturing is moving beyond dashboards and copilots into execution. Different vendors are approaching that shift from different angles, with some like Siemens focusing on engineering productivity and others such as Rockwell on software-led design and orchestration.

Schneider’s framing places the emphasis on convergence, bringing together automation, electrification and industrial intelligence in one architecture. That is what gave the announcement such weight.
