Disaggregated HCI: Five years in and what’s next for HPE

When HPE launched the industry’s first disaggregated hyperconverged infrastructure (dHCI) in 2019, it broke new ground. 

While most vendors were doubling down on traditional hyperconverged systems, bundling compute, storage, and networking into a single, rigid appliance, HPE introduced a fundamentally different model. Its dHCI approach decoupled compute and storage, allowing customers to scale each independently without sacrificing the simplicity and automation that made HCI appealing. 

“Managing traditional infrastructure is hard, and it really slows things down,” said Cheri Williams, SVP and GM of private cloud at HPE. “In 2019, HPE changed that with the industry’s first disaggregated hybrid converged industry, and we have led ever since, setting the standard that our competitors continue to chase.”

HPE’s dHCI offering has steadily matured into a cornerstone of its hybrid cloud strategy, particularly as businesses demand more agility, granular cost control, and consistency across data centre, edge, and public cloud environments. While traditional HCI vendors doubled down on appliance-based models, HPE leaned into integration and management software that emphasizes operational efficiency and flexibility.

“dHCI was a breakthrough and a significant leap forward for our customers,” Williams said. “HPE also anticipated what would be needed for the next-generation private cloud and the need for on-prem control, greater flexibility and cost efficiency.”

This culminated in a major announcement in 2025 that reaffirms HPE’s commitment to dHCI as a foundational element of modern IT infrastructure. 

At the heart of the update are two important innovations: the introduction of HPE Morpheus Enterprise and the expansion of HPE VM Essentials into the company’s private cloud portfolio.

From hardware to software-led dHCI

HPE’s dHCI architecture was initially positioned as a more scalable alternative to rigid HCI appliances that enabled IT teams to decouple the procurement and scaling of compute and storage resources. This flexibility made it especially appealing to mid-sized enterprises and service providers seeking cloud-like agility without public cloud lock-in.

The early iterations were tightly coupled with HPE ProLiant servers and HPE Nimble Storage, using InfoSight for AI-driven analytics and management. The result was a system that could intelligently optimize resources and proactively resolve issues—a key differentiator that still sets HPE apart from some of its legacy HCI competitors.

Over time, HPE’s dHCI evolved beyond its hardware roots. The introduction of HPE GreenLake brought as-a-service consumption to the model, while improved integration with Kubernetes, third-party management tools, and automation platforms enabled it to compete more directly with cloud-native approaches.

The 2025 refresh accelerates this trajectory and HPE’s Morpheus Enterprise  marks a significant evolution. With support for virtual machines, containers, and bare metal workloads, it centralizes management across on-premises infrastructure, edge deployments, and public cloud services. More importantly, it introduces sophisticated features like policy-based governance, chargeback, and deep integration with third-party tools—hallmarks of a mature hybrid cloud platform.

Customers are looking for flexibility and choice to position and deploy workloads on the cloud based on the needs of the workload. In this hybrid world, HP Morpheus Enterprise gives our customers the flexibility to run any workload on any cloud.”

By embedding HPE Morpheus and VM Essentials into its private cloud offerings, HPE is no longer just offering infrastructure, it’s offering a unified operational fabric.

Differentiating in a crowded field

The HCI space has never been short of competition. Nutanix, Dell Technologies (with VxRail), and VMware (especially post-Broadcom acquisition) all hold significant market share. These players have focused heavily on tightly integrated solutions with full-stack control, an approach that works well for some use cases but comes with trade-offs in terms of flexibility and cost scalability.

Nutanix, for example, has doubled down on its own hypervisor and proprietary stack, pushing into cloud management and cost governance. Dell’s VxRail, powered by VMware, remains a strong choice for enterprises already deeply invested in the VMware ecosystem. However, both approaches are less modular than HPE’s disaggregated vision. 

Where HPE carves out a distinct advantage is in the blend of open integration and enterprise-grade control. The addition of Morpheus Enterprise gives customers a single pane of glass for managing workloads across platforms and vendors, something its competitors can no longer match. 

What’s more, HPE’s ability to combine dHCI with GreenLake’s consumption-based pricing model adds a compelling economic layer that aligns with cloud-first procurement strategies.

Transforming IT with multi-cloud management and virtualization

Virtualized environments are becoming more complex — and more expensive to manage. Rising VMware licensing costs are pushing organizations to look for smarter, more flexible alternatives.

Edge and beyond

One of the more underappreciated strengths of HPE’s dHCI model is its applicability to edge environments. The ability to scale compute and storage independently, with centralized policy-driven control, makes it ideal for edge sites that require localized compute but limited storage, or vice versa.

This year, HPE has further embraced the edge by optimizing its dHCI stack for remote deployments, leveraging lightweight footprint options and zero-touch provisioning. The central management provided by Morpheus Enterprise means even distributed environments can be governed under consistent policy frameworks.

This aligns well with broader trends in industrial IoT, smart retail, and distributed enterprise architectures, where IT teams are being asked to manage dozens, or even hundreds, of micro data centers.

As hybrid cloud adoption continues to accelerate, the lines between infrastructure, platform, and service are increasingly blurred. In this context, HPE’s evolution from a hardware vendor to a hybrid cloud enabler looks to be a bet that’s going to pay off.

Its disaggregated HCI approach has allowed it to remain nimble and able to meet the needs of traditional IT buyers, while also appealing to DevOps teams, platform engineers, and cloud architects. The firm’s recent announcements double down on this versatility, offering a platform that supports the full spectrum of modern workloads.

Five years ago, disaggregated HCI may have seemed like a niche pivot. Today, it looks more like a blueprint for the future of enterprise infrastructure. And with the lines between on-prem and cloud continuing to blur, HPE’s ability to bridge both worlds, without forcing compromise, could be its most strategic advantage yet.
