HPE has launched what it believes is the industry’s most advanced cloud portfolio, aiming to cut the costs of hybrid IT setups and make them easier to manage. Its key new weapons are HPE Morpheus VM Essentials for virtualized workloads and HPE Morpheus Enterprise Software for unified cloud management, both announced today.
HPE claims that this not only strengthens its HPE Private Cloud Business Edition offering but could slash licensing costs and operation hours for IT teams.
“HPE has combined the savings and scalability of dHCI [Disaggregated Hyperconverged Infrastructure] with a flexible virtualization alternative, HPE VM Essentials and HPE Morpheus software,” said Cheri Williams, SVP & GM, HPE Private Cloud and Flex Solutions, during a press briefing.
“HPE Private Cloud Business Edition with Morpheus software gives enterprises a new alternative to lower those virtualization costs and gives them a path to modernize their private cloud in the data centre and at the edge.”
During the same call, Chris Macken, VP, IT Operations & Security, at Cambrian Credit Union shared his early insights into the HPE Private Cloud offering.
“A couple of years ago, we were using Cisco HyperFlex, and the operational time that it took for my team and even some of the downtime we were having was really affecting the amount of time our systems were available,” he said. They needed a new solution that would be more resilient.
“So we work with a local partner in Winnipeg [and together with HPE] we came up with the dHCI solution,” said Chris. “We started small and added on, which was very easy for us to do. We didn’t have to buy a whole bunch of stuff using capital.”
But this wasn’t merely about moving capital expenditure to operational, he explained. “Once we were fully migrated over, we realised an actual 30% savings in the amount of time that my team would focus on the infrastructure. And because of that, they were able to work on projects to help move the business forward, instead of just working on the infrastructure.”
This echoes one of HPE’s key claims about its new offering, with Sanjay Jagad, VP of Structured Data, separately claiming in the call that it can cut operation hours of its customers by 40%.
But there was one final benefit from Chris: “Another thing that we realised is a 20 to 30% increase in performance on our banking system. So end of day jobs [were] 20 to 30% quicker, which is a huge saving.”

This brings us to the promised savings. The main upfront cost comes from reducing VM licensing by up to 90%, according to HPE, with multi-hypervisor support and self-service cloud consumption. It also estimates 2.5x lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
“It’s very simple math,” said Rajeev Bhardwaj, VP & Chief Product Officer of HPE Greenlake Private Cloud. “Take a single server with one socket with 48 cores. Today, if you price it on a per-core basis on one side, and you look at our pricing, which is on a per-socket basis, you will see a 90% saving on licencing costs just on a server. And now you can extend that server across your entire cloud, and you can see these benefits multiply.”
His second example was based around datacenter usage. “There’s a 2.5x lower TCO through these innovations,” he said, pointing to three different factors.
“First and foremost, the architecture for dHCI. It is disaggregated so that customers can scale compute and storage independently. The inherent resiliency and data protection capabilities built into this platform means there’s a lower acquisition cost.”
He added: “Second, because the acquisition cost is lower, the amount of software licencing is also lower, so that’s the second contributing factor, and the third one is all around OPEX savings.”
In particular, “it comes integrated with Day Zero automation, day two lifecycle management and patching, and that, as we know, is a big deal for our customers”.
HPE Private Cloud Business Edition with HPE Morpheus VM Essentials is available now. However, integration with HPE SimpliVity will come in Q3 2025.
In addition, HPE Morpheus Software integration for HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000 is available today. HPE Aruba Networking CX 10000 customers will have to wait until June.
Finally, HPE Morpheus Enterprise Software is available now as standalone software.
