SugarCRM becomes SugarAI, a clear signal of where the world is moving

SugarCRM has announced a new brand identity: SugarAI. It’s yet another sign that we are moving at full pace into an AI-first world, and that businesses that don’t embrace the change will risk existence.

For SugarCRM – sorry, SugarAI – it’s the first name change since it was founded in 2004. This was a very different world, one that was still adjusting after the dotcom boom and bust.

And in terms of CRM, much has changed, explained CEO David Roberts. โ€œCRM must do more than store information; it must help teams take the right action at the right time with proactive, guided execution,โ€ he said. โ€œTeams donโ€™t need more data or dashboards, they need direction; SugarAI is about turning signals into action.

He added: โ€œOur customers expect Sugar to solve the 30-year-old promise of CRMย โ€“ย to help sellers and account managers get more value from the software than the effort they put into it. Sugar will deliver on this promise with its focus on seller experience and integration to ERP data, all powered by AI.โ€

The name change comes with a new URL too: visitors to the old site are now redirected to SugarAI.com. Complete with catchy tagline “The Precision Selling Platform.”

CRM and ERP: change is sweet

In the announcement of its new name, SugarAI quoted Cameron Marsh, Senior Analyst at Nucleus Research to give the move added contest.

โ€œThe bringing together of ERP and CRM bridges the gap between customer-facing front-office operations and internal back-office business transactions,โ€ย he said.

โ€œSurfacing trends and correlations across transactional and unstructured data offers key signals that can be extremely valuable for salespersons. For example, identifying when customers have stopped placing orders or when purchasing patterns change. This is a pragmatic approach to AI that supercharges sales and service, and itโ€™s exactly the kind of precision selling the industry needs.โ€

And SugarAI isn’t alone in embracing these changing purchase patterns.

The next few months will see the arrival of Oracle NetSuite Next, and the company is also rolling out new AI features into its existing product.

New name, same attitude

While the name is new, Sugar’s attitude remains the same as before. The company embraced generative AI features early and it was named a Leader in Nucleus Research’s Sales Force Automation technology value matrix for the sixth successive year in February.

“AI will shape the future of our industry. Its value will be determined by how it is applied,” wrote Roberts in an open letter announcing the new name. “At Sugar, our focus is clear: applied, actionable intelligence that delivers way more value than the effort required from the seller.”

He added: “SugarAI understands the full context of your business and translates that understanding into guidance that leads directly to action.ย

“SugarAI represents our commitment to restoring and delivering on the original promise of CRM with the technologies of a new era.”
