Why HPE believes it can reduce your virtualization costs by 90% – and why that isn’t the saving that actually matters

Discover how HPE’s latest innovation redefines virtualization costs and licensing models, but the biggest savings could be through saving your IT team from the monotony of everyday tasks.

Virtualization remains a cornerstone of modern IT infrastructure, but rising costs are straining already stretched budgets.

As organizations grapple with increasingly distributed workloads spanning multiple hypervisors, locations, and clouds, managing these complex environments has become not only costly but also time-consuming. This is ultimately proving to be a barrier to innovation, something that is critical for businesses striving to stay competitive in today’s fast-paced market.

HPE aims to change that with its updated Private Cloud Business Edition – and it’s making a bold claim.

According to HPE, its updated Private Cloud Business Edition, now available with Morpheus VM Essentials, can reduce virtualization costs by up to 90%. This figure will naturally turn heads, especially for organizations grappling with rising IT expenses.

But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that the headline figure isn’t the whole story. In fact, while the savings on software licensing costs are significant, the true value lies elsewhere.

Per-core vs per-socket: A licensing cost breakthrough

Virtualization software licensing has long been a thorn in the side of IT budgets. Most vendors price their licenses on a per-core basis, meaning the more cores your physical servers have, the higher your license fees. With modern servers regularly packing dozens of cores, these costs can skyrocket, often surpassing hardware expenses themselves.

HPE is disrupting this model by shifting to per-socket licensing, which charges based on the number of CPU sockets, not cores. This seemingly minor adjustment has a significant impact.

For example, consider a typical server with two sockets, each containing 16 cores (32 cores total). A per-core license priced at $500 per core results in a $16,000 licensing cost per server. With per-socket licensing at, for example, $3,000 per socket, the total drops to $6,000 – a 62.5% saving on licensing alone.

In some configurations, especially with higher core counts, savings can reach up to 90%, according to HPE, adding to the estimated 2.5x lower total cost of ownership (TCO) provided by the industry’s leading disaggregated hyperconverged infrastructure.

This change enables IT teams to take advantage of newer, high-core-count processors without being penalized by exponential licensing fees. More importantly, it simplifies budgeting, providing clearer, more predictable costs.

“In 2024, virtualization costs literally soared into double, even triple digits,” said Cheri Williams, SVP and GM of private cloud at HPE. “In December 2024, we introduced HPE VM Essentials, which gives customers a very affordable path forward.”

Enter Morpheus VM Essentials

When evaluating IT savings, it’s easy to focus on headline-grabbing reductions in virtualization licensing costs – after all, a 90% cut sounds transformative. But in reality, these software savings, while important, represent only part of the equation.

The larger, more lasting impact comes from operational cost savings, which dwarf licensing fees over time. Managing virtual environments is notoriously complex and labor-intensive, with IT teams juggling provisioning, patching, scaling, monitoring, and compliance across sprawling hybrid infrastructures. Each manual process adds hours, risks errors, and delays innovation.

That’s where Morpheus VM Essentials comes in. Morpheus is a hybrid cloud management platform that automates and orchestrates many of these labor-intensive processes, providing organizations with unified management across edge, core, and cloud environments. Designed for productivity, it leverages AI and automation to streamline setup and lifecycle operations, eliminate routine tasks, and accelerate VM provisioning, freeing up IT to focus on strategic priorities that move the business forward.

By automating routine workflows, Morpheus VM Essentials reduces human error and speeds up service delivery. Tasks that previously took hours or days can now be done in minutes, freeing IT teams to focus on strategic projects rather than firefighting.

HPE Morpheus Enterprise Software unifies cloud management for larger enterprises and service providers, which means organizations can use a simple interface to manage and govern virtualized, container-based and third-party runtimes across bare metal, on-prem and public cloud infrastructure. HPE claims Morpheus Enterprise also automates application provisioning to deliver 150X faster deployment of apps into any hypervisor or cloud, in addition to 30% lower cloud costs with what HPE calls analytics power rightsizing.

HPE’s integration of AI-driven operations predicts and prevents up to 86% of issues, which can substantially reduce the time IT teams spend on manual tasks.

What’s more, the combination of Morpheus VM Essentials and HPE Aruba Networking CX 10000 lowers TCO by up to 48%, increases performance by up to 10X, and provides microsegmentation, DPU (data processing unit) acceleration, and enhanced security.

Why operational savings matter more than licensing costs

“A lot of customers struggle with setup and lifecycle management and patching,” said Rajeev Bhardwaj, VP and chief product officer for private cloud at HPE. “Our platforms come integrated with these capabilities so our customers can spend less time on infrastructure, and more time delivering business outcomes above the stack.”

By automating these workflows through solutions like Morpheus VM Essentials, organizations drastically reduce the time and effort spent on routine tasks. This operational efficiency not only cuts labor costs but also accelerates service delivery and improves system reliability.

The result is an IT environment that can scale flexibly, adapt quickly to business needs, and free up valuable human resources for strategic initiatives rather than firefighting. Ultimately, it’s these sustained productivity gains and agility improvements that deliver the real, game-changing savings – not simply the price tags on software licenses.

When evaluating cloud and virtualization investments, enterprises should focus on total cost of ownership, balancing software fees with the human and operational costs of running the environment. HPE’s offering shows that the saving that really matters isn’t just on the invoice – it’s in the hours and resources saved every day.
