From digital literacy to digital intuition: the importance of rethinking clinician training

Healthcare has spent the better part of a decade, if not longer, focused on improving digital literacy. Electronic patient records, digital imaging, clinical portals, and data dashboards are gradually replacing paper files and analogue processes โ€“ย and while thereโ€™s still some way to go, the sectorโ€™s transformation has been rather remarkable.

Clinicians are routinely navigating complex digital environments that would have seemed implausible in everyday clinical practice, perhaps even 15 years ago. These capabilities have been essential in moving healthcare away from paper-based processes and enabling information to flow more effectively across organisations.

A new phase of digital maturity

But the technologies now entering clinical environments represent a different stage of digital maturity. Increasingly, systems are not simply storing information. Instead, they are analysing it, identifying patterns, and surfacing insights drawn from vast volumes of clinical data. As these capabilities become embedded into everyday workflows, the role of the clinician within digital environments is evolving โ€“ yes, to keep pace, but it is also the frontline teamsโ€™ workflow, pain points, and insights that are informing these technologies to facilitate more timely, better-informed decision making. 

Now, the challenge moves beyond literacy, per se, towards more advanced digital intuition. Clinicians must be able to recognise patterns within system outputs, assess algorithmic suggestions with confidence, and integrate those insights into their clinical reasoning. In an AI-enabled healthcare system, the true value of technology will depend not only on the detail these advanced systems can impart, but on how effectively clinicians are equipped to interpret and apply those insights.

Technology alone cannot deliver safer care

Healthcare technology conversations often focus heavily on implementation. New platforms are deployed, data is digitised, and analytical tools are introduced with the expectation that better outcomes will naturally follow. Yet, experience across healthcare organisations consistently shows that technology alone does not transform care.

Clinical decision-making must remain fundamentally human. A diagnostic result, a clinical note, or an imaging finding rarely exists in isolation โ€“ it forms part of a broader narrative that includes patient history, presenting symptoms, comorbidities, and the professional judgment (built over years of experience) that pieces it all together. While digital systems can highlight correlations and surface relevant information at scale, interpreting what those signals mean in terms of a patientโ€™s care pathway still requires clinical expertise. Human oversight, therefore, remains as critical as ever as digital systems become more and more capable. Clinicians must feel confident not only in accessing information but in evaluating the insights advanced systems present. 

The organisations set to make the greatest progress with emerging technologies are those that recognise this balance early. The implementation of these sophisticated systems and programmes, really, is a small part of the picture. The utmost attention must be given to their deployment and onboarding, ensuring clinicians understand how digital insights are generated, where their strengths lie, and how they can be applied within real clinical contexts โ€“ not to replace cliniciansโ€™ decision making, but to enhance it.

From mere system navigation to digital intuition

A lot of digital training delivered across healthcare settings has understandably focused on system navigation. Yet, while these skills of course remain vital, they represent only the first stage of working effectively within modern health technology environments. Clinicians can now increasingly interact with outputs that go beyond simple data retrieval. Risk indicators, pattern recognition, and proactive alerts, among many other forms of automated insight, have long been available alongside traditional clinical information. We now need to focus on whether this data is being harnessed effectively. This layer of clinical decision making requires an understanding of how to interpret the meaning and relevance of the insights systems are surfacing, enabling better-informed and faster outputs. 

Developing digital intuition means thoroughly equipping clinicians to engage meaningfully with these interactions. It stands to reason that if we are to truly empower clinicians and free up their pressured time, a different mindset around professional development must be adopted. This is not a one-off training exercise delivered during system rollout. Instead, frontline teamsโ€™ digital capabilities should evolve alongside the technology itself. A dedicated change team may be assembled, along with case-based learning, peer discussion, and structured feedback, all of which help clinicians build familiarity with how digital systems behave in real-world scenarios and gradually strengthen confidence. 

Interface design also plays a vital role here. Environments that show how insights have been generated, highlighting the data patterns or relationships behind a recommendation, reinforce transparency and understanding.

Over time, repeated interaction with well-designed systems allows clinicians to develop the same instinctive familiarity with digital insights they already possess with traditional diagnostic tools. We are beginning to see the early stages of this shift in organisations that prioritise intuitive access to patient information โ€“ environments where technology no longer acts as a barrier between clinicians and data, but instead helps surface the patterns that matter most at the moment decisions are made. In these settings, technology serves as a valuable, intelligent partner that supports clinical reasoning at the point of care.

Embracing the next wave of innovation 

The importance of digital intuition extends beyond day-to-day workflow improvements. Increasingly, it is transforming how demand flows through the NHS and plays a decisive role in determining how quickly healthcare organisations can adopt the next generation of digital tools. 

One thing is for certain: innovative technologies are emerging at an unprecedented pace. Advanced analytics, AI-assisted triage, automated document classification, and predictive insights all promise to help clinicians manage the growing volume and complexity of patient data. However, the success of these technologies ultimately lies in cliniciansโ€™ openness and confidence to engage with and further the insights they produce. For this reason, digital intuition must become a core focus of workforce development โ€“ immersive onboarding and extended training programmes, interfaces designed to aid workflow rather than slow it down, and ongoing feedback mechanisms can all reinforce trust, transparency, and a deeper understanding of how digital insights should inform clinical judgment.

With all this understanding in place โ€“ in every corner of the NHS and with all those who support and supply it โ€“ technology becomes something far more valuable and acts as an intelligent assistant, helping clinicians identify relevant signals within vast quantities of data. As such, the next frontier of health technology is not simply digitising more information. It is designing environments where insight surfaces naturally within clinical workflows and where clinicians have the confidence and intuition to act on it. 

It is this combination of human judgment and intuitive digital support that will empower and propel our NHS in the coming years.
