In a report on the market, IDC analyst Carol Silwa writes: “Object storage has moved beyond backups and archives to also target data-heavy AI and analytics workloads through newly architected products designed for higher performance and enhanced data management.”

She adds that object storage has moved into new areas and can no longer be considered a low-cost option for backup and archiving. “Newly architected object stores designed for high-performance flash drives have expanded the use cases for object storage to modern data-intensive workloads, including artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics applications. Those applications, with their associated data lakes and repositories, have been pushing the limits of traditional storage systems that vendors designed at a time when scalability needs tended to be more modest than they are today.”
