Lenovo has introduced new sustainability tools for its device-as-a-service (DaaS) offering, TruScale.
Lenovo has debuted the eco version of its DaaS brand, TruScale Device as a Service for Sustainability, which brings together new tools and device options aimed at reducing the environmental cost of hardware procurement.
Under TruScale, enterprises effectively lease hardware such as laptops and PCs rather than buying them outright. Vendors then manage, maintain and provide support services for their devices. For IT departments, it means hardware spend can be shifted from capex to opex.
The sustainability-branded TruScale now comes with a carbon impact portal, allowing companies to track the environmental cost of their devices, with details on products’ carbon footprint, packaging, energy efficiency and carbon offsetting. The portal can also export data for use in ESG reporting.
The sustainable TruScale service now also offers CO2 offsetting for the emissions generated by DaaS hardware during its lifecycle, including support for United Nations and Climate Action Reserve projects. According to the hardware giant, Coventry University Group has offset 223 tons of CO2 through Lenovo since moving to TruScale last year.
TruScale: Lenovo device-as-a-service
TruScale includes asset recovery services, where outdated or end-of-life machines can be recycled or refurbished. Companies can also choose refurbished devices for their own IT estate, bringing lower costs and carbon emissions during hardware refreshes.
Lenovo is the biggest seller of PCs worldwide: research by analysts Gartner found that the company shipped over 17 million units in the second quarter of this year – an increase of nearly 14% compared to the same quarter last year – giving the company around 27% of the global market.
The average laptop is reported to have a carbon footprint of 200 to 300kg for entry-level models, while high-end machines can go up to 500kg. The majority of the CO2 is associated with its manufacture. Estimates suggest 75% to 80% of a device’s carbon comes before it’s ever switched on.
According to the World Bank, the ICT industry is responsible for around 2% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. It’s also thought that ICT is responsible for around 4% of all electricity use globally.
