Ferrari’s F1 app roars into life powered by IBM watsonx AI

Ferrari has launched a new F1 mobile app developed by IBM and powered by its watsonx AI platform. The Scuderia Ferrari app (its official name) is available today on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

The AI will generate recaps of the race, including how the Ferrari team performed, “within hours of a race’s conclusion”, stated the press release.

More interestingly, it promises “post-race insights and data visualizations”. These will give hardcore fans access to data such as the telemetry, track conditions and tyre strategies.

The final AI fuel injection comes via historical driver and team insights. This will allow fans to compare the 2025 races with Ferrari’s long and illustrious history.

Ferrari’s view on the IBM AI-powered app

โ€œThis app is about bringing all our fans closer to the heart of the racing world of Ferrari,โ€ said Lorenzo Giorgetti, Chief Racing Revenue Officer.

โ€œWith IBMโ€™s cutting-edge AI technology and our shared commitment to innovation and excellence, we are creating a digital experience worthy of the Ferrari name.”

But then comes a note of caution: “The project has just been launched and will become more and more comprehensive in the next few months, maximising the potential of the tools that IBM is putting at our disposal.” We interpret that as “it’s a bit basic now but will get better, promise!”

Finally from Lorenzo: “I canโ€™t wait to see the fans interacting with this new app, entering a new dimension of the Ferrari experience.โ€

IBM’s view on Scuderia Ferrari F1 app

โ€œWith AI, weโ€™re creating a new blueprint for digital fan engagement that brings fans even closer to Scuderia Ferrari whether itโ€™s race weekend or not,” said Jonathan Adashek, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications at IBM.

We will gently note that Jonathan can’t quite bring himself to mention the team’s full name of Scuderia Ferrari HP.

“The app is built with the same data and analytics technologies used by IBM clients across industries to achieve enhanced customer experiences, help their employees reach new levels of productivity and make more informed, data-driven business decisions.โ€

Similarities with Wimbledon and US Open app

This isn’t new ground for IBM. It has a long history of innovation with Wimbledon and the US Open, creating AI-enhanced versions of these tournaments’ apps for the past two years.

For example, in 2024 IBM and Wimbledon launched “Catch Me Up” cards that gave an AI-written write-up for all the singles players.

The previous year, only months after ChatGPT 3.5 changed the world, it delivered AI commentary on matches.

Not all AI-powered features work. For example, there’s no sign of AI commentary on tennis matches making a reappearance – although we will see what Wimbledon and IBM come up with next month.
