AWS has added a new infrastructure region to its global cloud empire, with Mexico becoming the first region to join the cloud giant’s roster this year.
The Mexico region, which went live earlier this month, has three availability zones. The zones are separated geographically and have their own power, security and cooling. This ensures that if operations in one region are impacted, business continuity won’t be affected. However, according to AWS, the distance between the regions is not so great that it will affect latency.
AWS already has a number of Mexican enterprises using its cloud services. These include financial services company BBVA; healthcare provider Hospital Angeles; and beverage supplier Becle. AWS has also added several local companies to its Partner Network, including Escala 24×7 and XalDigital.
The new Mexico region will “support” 7,000 jobs full-time jobs at other companies that provide services to AWS, including maintenance, construction and engineering, according to AWS.
AWS said it plans to invest $5 billion in Mexico over the next 15 years but did not disclose details of how and where the sum will be spent.
However, it has announced a $300,000 InCommunities fund for Queretaro, a state in the centre of Mexico. AWS’ InCommunities funds typically support local initiatives in areas including STEM education, training and sustainability.
Amazon said it has already provided cloud skills training to 500,000 people in the country and plans to offer GenAI and cloud training to 200,00 more by the end of next year.
Mexico is the first AWS region in Central America, and joins 35 other regions already active across the world. AWS now provides services to 245 countries and territories.
Amazon launched its first infrastructure region in 2006, in northern Virginia. The region now sports six availability zones, 15 local zones and 8 wavelength zones.
The company is planning to launch four more AWS infrastructure regions this year: New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, located in Germany.
The regions will offer 12 availability zones between them. According to Amazon’s most recent set of financial results, which cover the third quarter of 2024, AWS contributed $27.5 billion to Amazon’s bottom line – around 17% of the company’s overall revenue. The figure is up 19% compared to the same quarter last year.
