Amazon’s Health Insights feature can interpret your blood tests for you – but only if it’s easy

Amazon’s One Medical service, which first introduced an AI health assistant in January, now comes with the ability to analyse customers’ blood test results.

The Health Insights feature will analyse 50 different parameters from users’ blood tests, according to the company. It will then offer advice based on those results, including tips on diet, exercise, stress and sleep.ย

Health Insights will also give users a “personalized wellness score”, although Amazon doesn’t say how that will be generated.ย

Amazon One Medical users can also discuss the results with the services’ agentic AI chatbot, Health AI. Amazon suggests customers ask for explanations of medical terms, or prompt the chatbot to describe how different blood tests results might be related.ย

How useful the Health Insights feature is remains to be seen. Making lifestyle suggestions – eat better, exercise more – to relatively healthy people is easy. Interpreting results for those with multiple complex conditions – arguably those that need personalised advice the most – requires greater finesse, and risk tolerance, than an AI service can likely provide.

Amazon notes that people with “certain excluded conditions that require specialized clinical guidance” won’t be able to use Health Insights.ย

Blood test results will also be “reviewed by One Medical providers according to established protocols” and “serve as a starting point for more informed conversations between members and their care teams”, Amazon states.

Amazon Health Insights prognosis

Amazon Health Insights is available in the One Medical mobile app, in the Lab Results & Insights section of the My Health tab, and is currently in beta. Like the rest of the One Medical service, it’s only available in the USA.

The company will track the performance of the feature based on “ember engagement, satisfaction feedback, provider input, and health outcome improvements”, Amazon said.ย

Amazon One Medical can be accessed via a dedicated app or through the Amazon website, and is available either as a subscription service or on a pay-per-visit basis.ย

A single video consultation costs $29, but like so many other Amazon services it’s promoted as part of the company’s Prime subscription. You pay an extra $99 per year for the first member, with a discounted price of $66 per year for up to five additional members.

User can get in-person appointments, usually the same or next day, and online telehealth appointments 24/7. Users can also get support via the service’s chat function. Amazon One Medical is set up as a primary care service, offering treatment for the kind of issues that a GP would typically see, such as urinary tract infections, erectile dysfunction and high blood pressure.

Amazon acquired One Medical in 2023 for nearly $4 billion, and subsequently merged it with Amazon’s own telehealth subsidiary Amazon Clinic.
