SAP has pledged more than €20 billion to strengthen Europe’s digital resilience, as it expands its Sovereign Cloud portfolio to help organisations adopt artificial intelligence while meeting strict data sovereignty and regulatory requirements.
The German software company said the investment reflects a long-term commitment to supporting Europe’s technological autonomy. The sovereign cloud services are designed to provide flexibility across infrastructure, platform and software, SAP claims, enabling organisations to innovate while ensuring compliance with local regulations.
“The digital resilience of Europe depends on sovereignty that is secure, scalable and future-ready,” said SAP Sovereign Cloud President Martin Merz.
“SAP’s full-stack sovereign cloud offering delivers exactly that, giving customers the freedom to choose their deployment model while helping ensure compliance up to the highest standards.”
The expanded offering includes three deployment models. SAP Cloud Infrastructure, an Infrastructure-as-a-Service platform developed with open-source technologies, operates within SAP’s European data centres, ensuring all data remains within the EU to comply with data protection laws.
SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site enables SAP-operated infrastructure to be hosted in customer-owned or customer-selected facilities, which is touted to give organisations maximum control over data, operations and compliance without losing access to SAP’s cloud innovation and architecture.
Meanwhile, Delos Cloud, available in Germany, provides a sovereign platform tailored to public sector requirements and designed to accelerate digital transformation.
“Europe’s leadership in the next era of digital innovation, especially in AI, will depend on how effectively we apply AI to solve differentiated industry use cases,” said SAP SE executive board member of customer services and delivery, Thomas Saueressig.
“With our expanded SAP Sovereign Cloud offering, SAP is unlocking access to the full spectrum of cloud innovations and AI capabilities for all markets and industries, including the public sector and regulated environments, while ensuring these advancements are delivered in a sovereign framework and on customers’ own terms.”
The move competes directly with other major cloud players, such as AWS, Google, and Microsoft, which have also launched sovereign cloud offerings in Europe.
However, given that SAP is a German-based company, it’s the only cloud player that can fully comply with European data laws and regulations, giving it an advantage against its US-based counterparts.
