Oracle Health to aid Canadian teaching hospital and alcohol-related liver disease research

Oracle has added to its roster of health collaborators with a new customer for its electronic health record (EHR) and the launch of a fresh research partnership.

Last week it revealed that Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre had signed up to use Oracle Health. It’s a big win, as Sunnybrook Health Services treats over a million patients a year. The teaching hospital, located in Toronto, is home to Canada’s largest trauma and burns centres.

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre will use Oracle Health as a replacement for several other existing health IT systems. This should cut the amount of times clinicians spend writing documentation, as well as making it easier to share patient information between the healthcare professionals involved in a patient’s care.

The hospital is also hoping that the data collated within the single EHR will make conducting research and clinical trials easier – the site conducts over $100 million of research each year.

Oracle announced an overhaul of its EHR earlier this year, which introduced voice navigation capabilities as well as more artificial intelligence features. These include using AI to show pertinent information about the patient that the clinician is seeing, to create patient summaries, and to speed up documentation and coding of procedures for insurance purposes.

Oracle Health’s liver disease research

Alongside signing up Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre as a Health customer, Oracle announced a deal with Baylor College of Medicine to work on research into alcohol-related liver disease (ALD). ย 

Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine will use the data to determine what factors increase a person’s susceptibility to developing the disease and identify which biological markers can give doctors clues about a person’s prognosis.

The university, based in Houston, Texas, will use anonymised data held on Oracle’s Health to study the condition. This will give researchers access to one of the largest cohorts of research subjects in the country.

The work “is expected to lead to earlier identification of ALD, deepen understanding of disease progression, and ultimately inform more effective prevention and treatment strategies”, according to Oracle.

Rates of ALD have been on the rise in the US in recent decades and the condition is thought to be one of the biggest causes of liver-related death in the country.
