Japanโs banking conglomerate Mitsubishi UFJ (MUFG) Bank has taken a hybrid cloud approach to modernising the infrastructure of its online banking service, Mitsubishi UFJ Direct.
Mitsubishi UFJ Direct serves more than 10 million users and is a key component to the bankโs long-term growth strategy. As part of its modernisation push, the bank sought to scale resources to handle up to five times its current transaction volume.
It also uses a microservices-based architecture to support the rapid development of services to improve the customer experience.

To support the upgrade, the bank selected Oracleโs Exadata Database Machine to power the upgraded version of Mitsubishi UFJ Direct. Mitsubishi UFJ Information Technology oversaw the development of the new system.

Oracle’s view on Mitsubishi UFJ upgrade
According to Oracle, the implementation delivered a five-fold increase in processing power and stable operations across the online banking service.
โOracleโs hybrid cloud capabilities have helped Mitsubishi UFJ Bank achieve success with its implementation while optimising costs,โ said Oracle Senior VP of Exadata and Scale-Out Technologies Kothanda Umamageswaran.
โMitsubishi UFJ Bank was able to perform a major upgrade to its on-premises platform with Exadata Database Machine, while the compatibility provided by OCI helped ensure that resources for testing upgrades could be accessed as needed, with consumption-based pricing.โ
Oracle highlighted how Mitsubishi UFJ Bank is now actively evaluating OCI for broader use, including the adoption of Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer in systems with high-security requirements.
In addition, the new on-premises Exadata platform uses Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) and Oracle Data Guard for scalability and availability. This move supports disaster recovery at a remote site and automatic database synchronisation.
