Japan’s Kasugai Municipal Hospital migrates critical data to the cloud with Wasabi Technologies

Japan’s Kasugai Municipal Hospital has selected Wasabi Technologies as its cloud storage provider for the migration of its backup data from tape and on-premise storage to the cloud.

According to Wasabi, the move to the cloud for the hospital will help it safeguard critical health data during natural disasters or in the event of a ransomware attack.

“Wasabi is the perfect solution for backups in the cloud that are protected with data immutability which prevents any alteration or deletion of data, ensuring healthcare providers like Kasugai Municipal Hospital can maintain operation during ransomware attacks or other disasters,” Wasabi Technologies Japan Country Manager Aki Wakimoto said.

“We look forward to partnering with Kasugai Municipal Hospital to provide the peace of mind their data is safe.”

The move by the hospital to safeguard its critical data comes off the back of numerous healthcare providers in Japan in recent years falling victim to ransomware attacks. These attacks have resulted in medical services being suspended for extended periods, and leaving healthcare providers unable to provide critical services.

No unexpected charges should disaster strike

According to Kasugai Municipal Hospital, if a disaster were to occur, recovering its data from Wasabi Technologies would also mean that it will be able to do so at a predictable price, as Wasabi does not charge for egress fees or API requests.

“With hyper scaler cloud services, unexpected charges can occur when retrieving data,” said Hayato Baba, Kasugai Municipal Hospital’s Medical Information Technology Center administrative management division information officer.

“If an incident occurs and you try to retrieve data from the cloud for recovery, an additional cost will be billed, even during restore tests, costs will be incurred.

“For public hospitals, if expenses exceed the budget, an application for additional budgets is required but with Wasabi, since there is no charge for retrieving data, it is possible to operate a backup system within an allocated budget.”

Kasugai Municipal Hospital also selected to combine Wasabi cloud storage and the protection of its immutable data copies with Cohesity’s backup solution.
