IBM adds to consulting arsenal with Txture cloud modernisation buy

IBM has announced its second acquisition of the month, with the purchase of cloud player Txture.

Txture describes itself as a “cloud modernisation” company, offering services including application rationalisation, transformation planning, business case building and sustainability advice.

It uses a choice of cloud platforms – including AWS, Google Cloud and Azure – and can be used to develop cloud transformation strategies for organisations. Txture creates an overview of a business’s current IT estate across cloud and on-premises, then analyses its applications and architecture, and their role within the enterprise.ย Based on a company’s modernisation goals – such as regulatory requirements and costs – the platform can then make recommendations.

Txture will now sit under the IBM Consulting umbrella, with IBM describing the acquisition as “a strategic step forward in our asset-led consulting strategy”. According to IBM, the addition of Txture will allow its consultants to offer a broader set of services around “cloud value management”.

To date, Txture has been involved with over 100 cloud transformation projects spanning 50,000 applications, IBM said.

IBM Consulting’s growth strategy

The company is based in the Austrian city of Innsbruck and was a spinoff from the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Innsbruck.

The purchase of Txture marks the second acquisition for IBM Consulting in October: earlier this month, Big Blue announced it was buying SAP S/4HANA services company Cognitus. The Dallas-based company will add to IBM’s expertise around SAP products including its ERP implementation packages RISE with SAP and GROW with SAP. It also brings its own software assets, including products for moving legacy systems to S/4HANA and specific offerings that support government contracting, IBM said.

According to its latest set of quarterly results, IBM’s consulting business now accounts for around a third of its total revenue, bringing in over $5 billion in the third quarter of the current financial year – a rise of 3% compared to the same quarter last year.

IBM’s third quarter financial results also showed it made $16.3 billion in revenue for the three months ending 30 September, an increase of 7% year on year, and generated $3.1 billion in net cash. The financial terms for the acquisitions of both Txture and Cognitus were not disclosed.
