HPE targets the edge with range of ruggedised ProLiant servers

HPE has introduced two new servers targeting extreme workloads and extreme environments. The HPE ProLiant Compute EL220 Gen12 and HPE ProLiant Compute EL240 Gen12 are both based on the all-new HPE ProLiant Compute EL200 chassis.

โ€œOrganizations are pushing towards the edge for AI inferencing, and remote operations, where traditional IT structures are impractical for many industries,โ€ said Krista Satterthwaite, Senior Vice President and GM, Compute, at HPE, announcing the news.

โ€œWith these next generation platforms, customers can address the complexities of edge computing more efficiently and with ruggedized performance.โ€

The news follows Dell’s PowerEdge XR9700, a rugged edge server designed with AI applications in mind, which Dell announced shortly before MWC 2026 in February.

Both new HPE servers will be released later this year, but for those who can’t wait HPE has also announced an updated version of the HPE ProLiant DL145 Gen11. It’s a compact 2U system featuring AMD’s EPYC 8005 series processors, with up to 84 cores.

HPE ProLiant Compute EL200 chassis: what’s new

But the big news is the big new chassis. HPE says the Compute EK200 has been built with demanding environments in mind. Not just in terms of extreme temperatures – although it operates between -40C and 55C with up to 95% humidity – but also where space, power and weight are all constraints.

There is still room for two HPE ProLiant Compute EL220 Gen12 servers or one EL240 server. Between them, this gives scalability from eight to 144 Intel Xeon 6 cores, and if you choose the EL240 then you can also select Nvidia RTX Pro 4500 or RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs.

In addition, HPE claims the servers can thrive in environments with “heavy vibration from aircraft or ground vehicles, environmental contaminants and electromagnetic interference”.

This means the new servers – including the ProLiant DL145 Gen11 with its ruggedised kit – support US national security standards. HPE also promises five-nines availability for telco rollouts in unattended environments.

HPE experts’ view

To tie in with the launch, “ComputeExperts” – a team of HPE server experts – wrote a blog that provides more insights.

“Decisions that once lived comfortably in centralized environments are now being pushed into stores, factories, energy sites, and network edges,” they write. “These locations do not offer stability by default. Power fluctuates. Cooling varies. Connectivity is inconsistent. Physical access is limited. Yet much of todayโ€™s infrastructure is still designed as if those conditions were guaranteed.”

This, they explain, is why HPE has introduced the new HPE ProLiant Compute EL200 Chassis. “With a compact, shallowโ€‘depth form factor, shared power and cooling, and support for ruggedized configurations, EL2000 enables compute to be deployed in spaceโ€‘constrained and harsh environments without sacrificing performance or serviceability,” they claim.

Use cases? They list “visionโ€‘based quality inspection and predictive maintenance in manufacturing, to network edge and Open RAN deployments in telecom, to remote monitoring and commandโ€‘andโ€‘control workloads in energy and public sector environments”.
