Company mission statement and goals
BigCommerce’s mission is to help merchants sell more at every stage of growth, from small startups to mid-market businesses, to large enterprises. BigCommerce’s goal is to empower merchants to build, innovate and grow their businesses online.
BigCommerce origin story
BigCommerce was founded in 2009 in Sydney Australia by Eddie Maachaalini and Mitchell Harper. They met in an online chat room where they discussed and came together to create BigCommerce. Their goal was to allow small businesses to set up professional online stores with minimum hassle or programming skills.
BigCommerce Offering
Products and services overview
Storefront design: BigCommerce’s platform includes a page builder tool that allows for several customizations, including customizing how the storefront’s theme, checkout and mobile-version look like. It’s integration with WordPress allows users to preview webpages before they are set live.
Storefront conversion: in an effort to improve shopping conversion rates, BigCommerce offers a number of off-the-shelf functionalities to store owners, including:
- Ability to create and manage coupons
- Site speed monitoring features (built with Google Cloud Platform)
- Deploying merchandise using drag and drop interfaces
- Integration with several digital wallets
- SEO optimization features
- Customizable faceted search tools for storefronts.
Cross-channel ecommerce: if you sell across multiple channels, i.e., online plus physical store, BigCommerce includes features that make it easier to manage and sync inventory, which can save countless businesses hours – not to mention headaches – of handling separate catalogues for each channel. It also allows for multi-storefront management, which essentially allows a single store to have multiple customisable storefronts, i.e., each using its own domain, while drawing from the same inventory catalogue. These integrations mean that BigCommerce can essentially act as a command centre not just for your website channel sales, but also for your channel efforts across 3rd party marketplaces (Facebook, Pinterest, eBay) as well as physical, brick & mortar, storefronts.
Pricing
BigCommerce Essentials has four different pricing tiers: standard, plus, pro and enterprise. As of April, 2023, their pricing is as follows:

BigCommerce is a PCI DSS compliant service provider and certifies annually all requirements (1-12) included as a shared hosting provider. PCI stands for Payment Card Industry. The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of requirements designed to ensure all companies that process, store or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment.
BigCommerce servers are PCI DSS 3.2 certified at Level 1, which protects against credit card data breaches and eliminates the massive cost and hassle of handling compliance for customers. It allows businesses to accept leading payment methods without worrying about implementing PCI standards for their online store.
PCI compliance applies to any merchant or organization that accepts, transmits, or stores any cardholder data, regardless of size. If a business accepts transactions from customers using credit or debit cards, PCI DSS requirements apply.
