HPE, along with seven leading lights in quantum computing, has announced the formation of the Quantum Scaling Alliance. Think of it as the Avengers of quantum computing, with each company bringing its own expertise to bear in the hope of driving more breakthroughs in this fast-developing area of technology.
So who are the intrepid eight members and what skills do they offer? As with all good superhero stories, it’s time to introduce a table.
There are also two human leaders for this alliance. First, Dr Masoud Mohseni fromย HPE Labs, the applied research arm of HPE, who will oversee the initiative. Second, John Martinis, the 2025 Nobel Laureate who was recognised for pioneering advances in quantum computing. He is also Co-Founder and CTO at Qolab.
Aims for the Quantum Scaling Alliance
HPE aims to build “scalable, hybrid solutions that seamlessly integrate quantum capabilities with classical high-performance computing and advanced networking”, according to the press release.
This should open up new areas for drug discovery and materials research, not to mention secure data processing. Something very necessary in the era of post-quantum security.
โFor quantum to succeed as a viable long-term computing paradigm, it must scale by integrating with classical supercomputing systems,โ said Dr Mohseni. โThe Quantum Scaling Alliance is offering aย full-stackย solution – a large partnership with horizontal integration that unlocks compute potential that is otherwise unachievable through a vertical approach.โ
โQuantum computers hold the key to transforming industries through their unique ability to tackle intrinsically quantum problems,โ added Martinis. โBy harnessing quantum systems, we can achieve breakthroughs in areas ranging from semiconductor manufacturing to sustainable fertilizer production – solving challenges previously thought insurmountable.โ
In addition, the Quantum Scaling Alliance lists five main goals:
Aligning quantum innovation with the existing semiconductor and HPC ecosystem
Accelerating discovery by tackling problems that are uniquely suited to quantum computing
Unlocking breakthroughs in areas like semiconductor optimization and quantum chemistry
Mobilizing shared resources to overcome barriers that no single group can solve alone
To ensure quantum becomes a truly viable, industry-wide computing paradigm – not a niche technology
