Laptop manufacturers are constantly finding ways to get us connected faster. Dell has accelerated the startup process in a way which could be disconcerting if youโre not expecting it, but donโt panic! Weโll explain why your Dell laptop turns on when opening the lid.
What is โPower on Lid Openโ
Iโm unsure if nominative determinism can be applied to computer functions but it hasn’t stopped Dell from trying. Power on Lid Open is the Dell function which tells your laptop to turn on when opening the lid. Not every laptop in Dell’s range will do this (so donโt panic, thinking that yours is faulty). It’s a function that is becoming more popular and other manufacturers are also using tweaks to bypass the power button.
How to disable โPower on Lid Openโ
This function is part of the machineโs UEFI (BIOS in old money) and isnโt controlled by Microsoft Windows. The easiest way to access the UEFI is to begin with the machine powered off. Tap the F2 (or F12, depending on the model) key whilst powering on the laptop.
With good timing, the machine will drop into the UEFI which you can navigate using the arrow keys or mouse. Head towards the Power menu and look for the Power Management sub-menu. Power on Lid Open should be a toggle option, which you can click to disable. Click Apply Changes and then let the machine restart. The next time the machine powers down, youโll need to press the power button to fire it up.
How to enable โPower on Lid Openโ
See above, itโs exactly the same process except that youโre toggling the Power on Lid Open switch to the on position.
Now Iโve thought about it, Dellโs choice of Power on Lid Open (PoLO) has echoes of Power On Self Test (POST) which has become standard computing nomenclature. For my money, it has the edge over Lenovoโs Flip to Start, which is their method of turning on a laptop when opening the lid.
How does my Dell laptop know that the lid is open?
The webcam on your laptop constantly records your movements, so the moment the Dell camera detects a luminescent change from dark to daylight, it sends a signal directly to the motherboard to begin the power-on process.
I mean, that answer would be great if it were true (it isnโt) because itโs much more technically apposite than the real reason. The truth is that itโs all down to magnets (yes, really this time).
Why does Dell put magnets in the lids of its laptops?
Magnets inside the screen act as an invisible magnetic switch, informing the laptopโs system whether the lid is open or closed.
The magnet triggers a hall-effect sensor located somewhere within the lower parts of a laptop, such as the hinge, palmrest, or motherboard. As the lid closes, the magnet moves close enough to the sensor to shut it off.
This usually turns off the display and puts the machine to sleep. Opening the lid moves the magnet out of the proximity of the hall effect sensor, so it turns on. This is the beginning of the sequence which decided to power-on the laptop.
This mechanism is extremely reliable and durable. If you own a very old Dell, you may notice a small plastic pin near the hinge that the lid presses down when you close it. This โpin versionโ pre-dates the mass adoption of hall-effect sensors and was prone to breaks and other forms of wear and tear.
Which Dell laptops support โPower on Lid Openโ?
While not every Dell laptop comes with this feature enabled, itโs increasingly common in newer ranges. Models within the XPS, Inspiron, Latitude, and Vostro series often include Power on Lid Open, especially those released in the past couple of years. Youโll typically find it listed in the UEFI/BIOS settings if itโs available.
If youโre unsure whether your laptop supports it, a quick check in the Power Management menu inside UEFI should confirm it.
Why Do manufacturers enable this feature by default?
Laptop makers like Dell and Lenovo are turning to features like Power on Lid Open to make their devices feel more instant-on and smartphone-like. The aim is to reduce friction โ no fumbling for a tiny, side-mounted power button. The moment you lift the lid, your laptopโs either booting up or resuming from sleep.
This feature aims to improve convenience for business users, students, and anyone using a laptop on the move. However, it can catch people out if they arenโt expecting it, especially when packing a laptop into a bag before it completely powers off.
This feature can also create a trip-hazard for repairers. One small nudge in the wrong place can cause the machine to commence a power-on cycle when the technician least needs one. If you set your Dell machine to power on when the lid opens, disconnect the battery before attempting any repair.
Could โPower on Lid Openโ affect battery life?
Itโs worth noting that enabling Power on Lid Open might have a slight effect on battery life if your laptop lid is accidentally opened while in transit or if it turns on unnecessarily.
To minimise the risk:
- Make sure to fully shut down your laptop (rather than just putting it in sleep mode) before placing it in a bag.
- Disable Power on Lid Open via the UEFI if you travel frequently and donโt need this feature.
- Use a well-padded laptop sleeve or case that prevents lid movement during travel.
Alternative startup options you might not know about
Aside from Power on Lid Open, some Dell laptops and other brands support additional startup triggers you can configure in UEFI:
- Wake on AC: The laptop powers on automatically when a power cable is plugged in.
- Wake on LAN: Allows remote startup via network signal (mostly for enterprise setups).
- Wake on USB: Certain laptops can be powered on with a connected USB keyboard or mouse.
These options live in the same Power Management settings area within UEFI. If youโre looking to customise how and when your laptop wakes up, itโs worth having a look around.
What about MacBooks and other Windows laptops?
As noted, Lenovo calls their version Flip to Start, and it works in much the same way. HP and Asus also offer similar options under names like Lid Open Resume or Lid Open Power On in their BIOS settings.
MacBooks have enabled a variation of this for years. From macOS Catalina onwards, most MacBooks turn on automatically when you open the lid or plug in the charger, though you can disable it via Terminal commands if you wish.
