Great news for anyone who loved having an AMD Threadripper in their high-end computers: they’re back. AMD has announced three new AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 series chips, with prices starting at $1,499.
“Why are we doing this?” rhetorically asked Don Woligrowski, Senior Processor Technical Marketing Manager at AMD, in a pre-launch briefing. “Plain and simple, we heard the feedback. There was a lot of feedback that this was a desirable platform and in HEDT [high-end desktop computers] we thought it would be best covered by a single [Threadripper] Pro platform across the board… it has been made clear that there’s an appetite for a high-end desktop version of this platform.”
Some folks don’t need all the PCIe lanes. Some folks you know, don’t eat eight channels of memory. And so it is appealing for folks to have to really address the whole market to get to those features and a slightly lower cost platform. And so that’s we’re doing that’s that’s a federal urge to say on that story. We heard you. You’re right. We bought it back.”

Three processors will debut come 21 November 2023, as detailed above. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7980X sits at the top of the range and costs USD $4,999 (we don’t yet have UK or Australian pricing), the 7970X costs $2,499 and the 7960X is a 24-core snip at $1,499.
All the processors support four memory channels and 92 PCIe lanes, and as the X in their name indicates they are all overclockable.

AMD has also announced a new range of its Threadripper PRO WX-Series processors. This time there are four new chips, but it’s first worth covering a summary of their differences compared to the Threadripper 7000 series.
All the new chips will be available from 21 November. Here’s a brief table summarising their differences, but note that we don’t yet have confirmed pricing for these chips.

AMD went into much more detail about the performance of the Threadripper PRO chips during the call, claiming that it could save professionals 27 minutes every hour. Quite a claim.
